Plateau State is grappling with a cholera outbreak that has resulted in five fatalities and 53 suspected cases, according to health authorities. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, confirmed the grim figures on Sunday in Jos, highlighting the seriousness of the situation while assuring that it remains manageable with concerted efforts. The outbreak is primarily concentrated in the Pushit, Mangu 1, and Mangu 2 communities within the Mangu Local Government Area. Initial reports indicated fewer suspected cases, but the numbers have since risen, raising concerns about ongoing transmission. As of June 12, 2026, there were 53 suspected cases, including 10 Rapid Diagnostic Test-reactive cases and four laboratory-confirmed cases. The five deaths recorded represent a case fatality rate of 9.43 percent, with the fatalities including four women and one man. In response to the escalating crisis, the Plateau State Government has activated its Incident Management System (IMS) to ensure a coordinated and efficient response. This framework aims to streamline efforts in line with national and international emergency response protocols. Health authorities have deployed additional Rapid Response Teams to the affected areas, expanded treatment and isolation facilities, and procured essential medical supplies, including Rapid Diagnostic Test kits and intravenous fluids. Dr. Baamlong urged residents in Mangu and surrounding areas to adhere strictly to preventive measures. These include drinking safe water, practicing proper hand hygiene, avoiding open defecation, and maintaining good sanitation through effective waste disposal. He also stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if cholera symptoms appear, emphasizing that early treatment is crucial in preventing fatalities. Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by contaminated food or water, thrives in environments with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water, making preventative measures vital. The state government is intensifying public health interventions to curb the spread and mitigate the impact on affected communities.
