Abuja, Nigeria – The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) are forging a robust collaboration aimed at accelerating the adoption of local technology within Nigeria's vital oil and gas industry. This strategic partnership is set to leverage emerging technologies to foster innovation, enhance efficiency, and drive digital transformation across the energy sector.

The collaboration, spearheaded by the NNPC's Research, Technology, and Innovation (RTI) Unit, focuses on shifting the industry away from traditional resource exploitation towards a more innovation-centric model. This new approach will embrace technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics to reshape energy production, efficiency, and sustainability in Nigeria.

Malam Kashifu Inuwa, the Director-General of NITDA, emphasized the critical role of information technology as an enabler across all sectors and highlighted innovation's importance in the future of the energy industry. NITDA's strategic priorities, including promoting digital literacy, nurturing local talent, strengthening research ecosystems, and advancing indigenous technology solutions, are central to this initiative.

"Reducing reliance on foreign technologies while encouraging homegrown innovation is vital to achieving digital sovereignty and sustainable economic growth," stated Inuwa. NITDA is committed to supporting the NNPC in developing a strong innovation pipeline by connecting the corporation with Nigeria's burgeoning startup ecosystem. This will involve engaging startups through incubation programs and innovation challenges to create practical solutions tailored to the oil and gas industry.

The NNPC has consistently expressed its commitment to advancing local content development in the energy sector. This aligns with the broader national strategy, underscored by the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act of 2010, which aims to maximize economic benefits for Nigeria by promoting local workforce, procurement, and technology transfer.

NITDA, established in 2001, has been instrumental in developing, regulating, and advising on information technology in Nigeria. Its mandate includes implementing the National Digital Economy Policy, setting IT standards, and fostering local content.

This partnership between NITDA and NNPC is expected to institutionalize a platform where Nigerian technology experts can collaborate, share innovative ideas, and contribute to building a globally recognized digital economy.
