As the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games approach, former Nigerian sprint queen Mary Onyali has issued a strong call to the nation's young athletes, emphasizing the critical importance of discipline, dedication, and resilience as they prepare to compete on the international stage. The Games are scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal, from October 31 to November 13, 2026, marking a historic occasion as the first Olympic event to be held on African soil.

Team Nigeria is set to depart for Dakar on October 29, with Onyali stressing that winning medals at the Youth Olympics requires more than just athletic prowess. "Winning medals at the Youth Olympics requires a lot, including discipline, dedication and resilience," Onyali stated in a recent address.

Onyali, who represented Nigeria in five senior Olympic Games and achieved historic podium finishes at the inaugural World Junior Championships in 1986, shared her insights based on her extensive experience. She advised the athletes to remain focused and clear-minded when competition begins on October 31.

"The athletes should know they are our ambassadors in Dakar and they should compete without fear. They should approach their events the same way they have approached other local and international competitions. They must remember that crossing the line first matters a lot," Onyali urged.

She expressed confidence in Team Nigeria's potential to excel, highlighting individual athletes like Rosemary Nwankwo, who possesses the experience to potentially win the 100m gold. Onyali also mentioned Faith Ezechukwu, Chisom Rita Ezeh, Tejiri Praise Ugoh, Gift Gowon Oghenerunor, and Bright Gift as athletes to watch in the athletics events.

Echoing similar sentiments, the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, has also cautioned the contingent against misconduct, urging them to be responsible and protect Nigeria's image. Gumel assured the athletes of the NOC and National Sports Commission's support, emphasizing the nation's commitment to building on previous successes at the Youth Olympic Games.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will feature a diverse range of sports, including athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis, and beach volleyball. The Games promise to be a momentous event for both the participating athletes and the African continent, offering a platform for young talent to shine and inspire future generations.
