Five civilians were killed and 47 others injured on Thursday, October 1, 2026, when a drone strike, attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hit a university dormitory in El Obeid, the capital of Sudan's North Kordofan state. The strike targeted student housing at the University of Kordofan, according to initial reports from the non-governmental Sudanese Doctors Network [16, 17, 18, 20].

The Sudanese Doctors Network condemned the attack, labeling it a grave violation of international humanitarian law and part of an alarming escalation against civilian infrastructure. They called for international intervention to support the wounded and hold those responsible accountable [16, 17, 18].

El Obeid has been a frequent target of drone attacks in recent months, with the wider Kordofan region experiencing intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF since October 2025 [16]. The city, a key strategic and transport hub, has seen its healthcare and education infrastructure severely compromised by the ongoing conflict [16].

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has devastated the country, leading to tens of thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and a severe humanitarian crisis [17, 18]. The education sector has been particularly hard-hit, with widespread school closures disrupting learning for millions of children [7, 9, 10, 11]. Drone warfare has become a prominent feature of this conflict, with both sides increasingly employing these weapons, often targeting civilian areas and infrastructure, resulting in a high civilian death toll [2, 12, 14].
