KYIV, Ukraine – October 28, 2026 – Ukraine is facing an unprecedented wave of Russian airstrikes, with residential areas and critical infrastructure becoming increasingly vulnerable. In the past 24 hours alone, Russian forces have deployed thousands of drones and guided bombs, alongside missile strikes and conventional airstrikes, leaving Ukrainian cities reeling and civilians in constant fear for their safety. [11]

Overnight on October 27-28, Russian forces launched a massive barrage, including an unspecified number of Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and 280 drones. [4] These attacks have targeted energy facilities, logistics, and infrastructure across multiple regions, with reports of a significant escalation against Ukrainian logistics, including damage to Kyiv's Southern Bridge. [8] The Ukrainian Air Force stated that on the night of October 6-7, it intercepted 161 Russian aerial assets, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and Shahed-type drones, which primarily targeted Kyiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. [3]

On October 24-25, Russia conducted a series of drone strikes, launching 126 Shahed-type and Gerbera-type drones, along with other aerial munitions. Ukrainian forces managed to down 101 of these, but the strikes still impacted 14 locations. [12]

This escalation comes as diplomatic efforts continue, with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. [8] Putin, however, reiterated his long-standing demands, including NATO expansion as a cause of the conflict and the recognition of “realities on the ground,” which implies accepting Russian occupation of Ukrainian territory. [4]

Amidst the intensified aerial warfare, a localized ceasefire in Oleshky, Kherson Oblast, brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, began on October 27 to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. [6, 10] However, the broader conflict continues with fierce fighting reported on the front lines. [11] The Ukrainian military reported that over the past 24 hours, Russian forces carried out 72 airstrikes and fired on populated areas and military positions 2,518 times. [11]
