Folarin Balogun netted two goals to lead the United States to a resounding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener on Friday night at SoFi Stadium. The Americans delivered an attacking masterclass in front of a sold-out crowd, marking their largest-ever World Cup win and setting a strong tone for the tournament co-hosts.

The scoring began early for the U.S. when Paraguay's Damian Bobadilla inadvertently put the ball into his own net in the seventh minute after a dangerous cross from Weston McKennie. Balogun doubled the lead in the 31st minute, coolly finishing a pass from Christian Pulisic, who recorded his 21st career assist, tying him for fourth most in U.S. history. Balogun then struck again just before halftime, converting a chance to give the U.S. a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

Balogun's performance made him the first U.S. player to score multiple goals in a World Cup game since 1930, when Bert Patenaude scored a hat trick against the same opponent, Paraguay. The striker, born in New York and raised in London, chose to represent the United States, making a significant impact in his World Cup debut on home soil.

Paraguay managed to pull a goal back in the 74th minute through Maurício, who capitalized on a loose ball. However, any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in stoppage time when Gio Reyna sealed the 4-1 victory with a superb strike.

Despite a strong performance, Christian Pulisic was substituted at halftime as a precaution due to a kick to his calf. The U.S. team, playing under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, showcased high intensity and creative attacking play, impressing fans and setting a positive precedent for their World Cup campaign.
